How to tell when vertically grown watermelon are ripe?

I have a few Sugar Baby watermelons that have been going for some time now in their vertical space. The only method I can find online to check for ripeness is to check the color of the melon that is touching the ground. Seems like that wouldn't work here, as there is no "underside" or side touching the ground! How do you tell when a vertically grown watermelon is ripe?

hi! I read somewhere the best way to see if a watermelon is ripe is when the curly part attached to it turns brown. This is just something I found in an article.
