The obelisks cost more than regular tomato cages. I made my cages from re-mesh concrete re-inforcement wire. They are 5 feet high and about 2½ feet across. They cost about $7 each, but they are very strong and big.

I don't think the obelisks would be as practical as the re-mesh cages, but the obelisks certainly look more decorative. You will probably need to use some ties to help the tomato vines "climb" the obelisk. With the aid of ties, you can get a tomato vine to "climb" nearly anything.

Many gardeners grow a lot of tomatoes, so the cost of the cages or other supports is a factor.

I use the concrete re inforcement wire also for my tomatoes, and I usee it for my cucumbers also. works great.

I have 2 obelisks that I use to grow cherry tomatoes in 2 large pots. They are about 7 feet tall, & my 'maters routinely grow all the way up & sometimes hang over! They were really inexpensive-I got them a couple of years ago at one of those traveling tool sales & I thnik they were only about $7 each. The pots are on the front porch, so the obelisks are a little nicer looking than the supports I use in the back yard-the plants with the ripening tomatoes are downright ornamental, & one year I kept track & harvested over 1000 'maters from the 2 pots!
