Dear Internet:

I bought a house for the first time. Found out I like gardening. Have no experience, but have been planting trees and ripping up neglect.

I want to prune a grapevine to run up a pillar to the slatted roof of our front porch.

The grape will need to climb about 10 feet before it branches out.

I brought home and planted the vine. Faces west and gets sun from noon to sunset. The vine is about 1 foot high, then branches in the shape of a Y for 6 inches. There are some buds on the arms of the Y, a number of pruned branch spaces.

Does anybody have any general advice about pruning grapes to climb? More specifically, can they have 2 trunks? Should I prune it all the way back to just prior to the first branching?
