Ideas for a Container Vine

Posted by patrick212 IL (My Page) on

I'm looking for some suggestions for a vine to grow in a container onto an 8' trellis. I've been growing Cardinal Climber and Cypress Vine but would like a change of scenery. In the past I've grown various MG and Moon Flowers. I grow all my annuals from seed under lights and would also like to start the vines from seed. Here are some of the factors to consider. Thanks in advance for your help.

*The vines needs to be grown as an annual (I live in Chicago)
*They will grow on a wall getting full sun that can become quite hot.
*The containers are apprx. 20" in diameter and on a watering system so water needs are not an issue.
*I would like a vine that flowers until the first frost if possible.
*I will also grow some trailing plants and probably a Salvia in the same container.

Thanks again, Pat

Hi Pat, I came here with the same question so I hope you don't mind if I jump into your question. I've been looking at the Hyacinth bean, the scarlet runner bean & Malabar spinach as some possibities as well as the ones you mentioned. What else is there? Also I have Japanese beetles in my area so I would like something that they don't like. I was looking at the Hyacinth bean but the MoBot site says the J. beetles attack it & a U Mich Ext site says that it is resistant to them---so which is it?

Thanks Larry.

I've planted Malabar Spinach a few years ago with mixed results. It was a relatively tender vine and got some type of disease that I could never identify. The Hyancinth bean vine looks like a great option so far. I'm also going to check into how Cobaea handles the heat. The two walls I grow the vives against get very hot in the afternoon.

Take care, Part

How about Cypress Vine? They now come in some wonderful flower colors and do super in containers in full sun. One of my favorite vines.
