Move a wisteria?

I have a large wisteria at the edge of my deck. It grows supper fast and comes over/through the 3ft rail around the deck. It gets so big that it blocks the rest of my yard. My wife wants to move it to the side of the deck so it will not block the yard and form a privacy screen at the same time. I want to cut it down and buy a new/small wisteria vine and to put on the side of the deck. We got a quote of $90 from a professional to move the vine around the corner of the deck. He would not gaurantee the vine would live. Would it be better to cut the old wisteria down and plant a new vine or to keep the old and move it? If all wisteria grows as fast as what we have it will do the privacy screen job nicely in no time

I have heard from a garndener at the local nursery that depending on what kind of Wisteria they can become root nightmares and hard to get rid of. He said that some types grow large and long roots that can damage foundations. My point is- you may not be able to just cut it down. You may have to remove the roots. Just a thought.

On the lighter side, I wish you would move it, and report back if it dies, or if every cut root sprouts. They can be very invasive and rather difficult to get rid of. Jim |

I've transplanted a small wisteria and it survived, however the area it was moved from sprouted nice healthy wisteria shoots from roots left behind! I don't know about transplanting a larger one, it may shock it into a heavy bloom if it survives though. Why not just train it to the side of the deck? They are pretty easy to train in a new direction? Why risk double the roots?

Thanks for your responses. I'll let you know what the outcome is. As for training it in a new direction, the vine is between stairs now and to train it to go to the other side would be a problem.

Wisterias are indeed beautiful vines....after I finally got mine to bloom (by hard pruning) I made a decision to take it down while I could....roots and seedlings from the roots were everywhere...if fact, I took out two. After a few years, it was too much work to keep them in bound. I hope that yours doesn't the deck :):) I'm still applying stump remover because my hubby couldn't dig the root out. I just wanted you to know of my experience.

I had to move my small one after a rabbit chewed on the base of it, and it came back just fine! Around here, if something actually LIVES it's a miracle.
