If you are really in zone 7b as your profile suggests, this will not work for you.......only hardy to zone 9.

Sounds like a pretty nice wall.....why do you need to cover it?

Gardengal48 Thanks for the reply. I want to cover it because it is an unattractive grey (cement color). Originally, we had planned to have it painted this summer, after it has had a chance for the moisture content to lower. It is behind our pool and I would prefer to not see the grey, but I was thinking that a lush green wall would be even nicer than the paint. Perhaps Boston ivy would be a better match for my needs. Mostly, I just want something that will stay on the wall and not escape outward into my beds. A previous house that I owned had English ivy planted on a sloped bed, and it smothered everything. No matter how much I would pull up, more would appear to take its place. The roots spread underground, and I never won that battle. I don't want to deal with something like that again, so I am seeking advice from all of you more knowledgable gardeners.

Look into a climbing hydrangea which are amazing in bloom and the bark in winter is very appealing. It is deciduous.

I second the climbing hydrangea.
But, be patient with it, give it time to grow and you
will love it.
