Don'T feed it and cut it back next year it will bloom

Patience is the key with this vine - it will bloom when it's ready. I know this statement is an oxy-moron, but I have had cuttings bloom at 2 years old, and others that didn't bloom until they were 7 years old.

I've never fed it.

Cut it back how far? I can always cut off the part that grows on top of the pergola and top it off at head height. Would that be good?

Does it bloom before leaves emerge? It is very slow to wake up each year.

Cut it back so as to leave SIX leaf nodes on each branch. Yes, it blooms before it leafs out. Remember, it IS still winter - ours are just now starting to bloom and it's warm (sort of) here year around.

Cutting it back now would be good? Before any leaf buds wake up? Or should I wait until I see if this is the year it will bloom?

In general, should I prune it in the fall or in the spring?

Pruning encourages growth, so cut it back in the spring, not the fall.

Do you know the provenance of your wisteria? Is it a named cultivar or do you think it might be an unnamed seedling? Wisteria can take 10 - 15 years to flower from seed and even then you are not certain of getting good quality blooms. If you really want one it's probably best to buy a good cultivar of known provenance.

the flowers grow on new growth. some wisterias can take up to seven years to bloom. mine is dont flowering now. I will probably trim back some of the vines a 1/4 of the way. mine usually flower twice in a season.

If I cut back my wisteria right after it blooms in spring I can get a second lighter flush of blooms. Karen

Thanks for the advice. Flora_uk, I bought it in a box at a chain store with a garden center. It might have had a name, but at this point I don't recall it. I'm assuming it would not be a seedling, since it is not a pass-along plant.

There are still nurseries over here who unscrupulously sell seedling wisterias to an unsuspecting public. Sso possibly, even if you bought you plant in a store, it might still be a seedling.

I suspect I got a seedling through a mail order. It is still not blooming after 4 years. I moved it to a full sun spot and it seemed to put on more size but still no blooms so I can understand your frustration. Karen
