I have a 20' high area of goat wire strung at the end of my lower patio with Confederate Jasmine vines growing on it for shade in the afternoon. They haven't completely covered yet. Would this vine be good to plant this spring to give shade until the jasmine gets big enough because I really want the evergreen vine but in the meantime I need shade. Advice on another fill-in annual would be appreciated if this one isn't right.

You could do that - it will fill in the area, BUT - when it dies this fall, you run the risk of tearing up your Jasmine vine, trying to remove the annual vine.

Amyta, Go to Walmart and buy an umbrella. Use that for shade til your Jasmine grows in.
