I should say, it is a cedar fence with decent sun. Also, we have small children so nothing poisonous, but edible is fine.

Some of the more aggressive vines like trumpets will damage the wood as will ivy's. With vines that don't grow into the wood they need something to climb on. I have a wood slat privacy fence and use C hooks with nylon fishing line strung to give my vines something to climb. I don't know of an evergreen that wouldn't damage the fence. I use passion vines and morning glories but the MG's are annual and I dig up my non cold hardy passies. There's lots of flowering vines like clematis but I don't know if they grow fast enough for what you want and they aren't evergreen.

karyn1: How far away from the fence are you nylon lines? A couple inches?

It depends on the length of the anchors (C hooks) that I use but the average is probably about 1.5".
