Will hydrangea crawl 7 ft,, then climb trunk?

Hi,

I have terrible luck with vines. Actually, it's not so much bad luck as it is that I like to move things, and of course I know that vines take a while to establish deep roots.

That being said, I moved a climbing hydrangea a couple of times. It has now been in place for almost 2 years and looks like it might finally do something this year. Unfortunately, I planted it near a post which is just not going to be enough for it. It is 6 - 7 feet from a spruce tree with the lower limbs dying, and I would so love to guide it that way to climb the trunk. Of course, I am tempted to move it ... but I know that this would set me back. I resolve not to move any more vines.

So, will it crawl over there if I help it, then climb? Or does it need to get vertical right away?

Thanks,

Shadey
