Sorry to tell you but I consider that vine to be a nasty weed. I have several types in my yard and they are hard to get rid of. They start slowly as seedlings but increse in rootball if you don't dig them up, they also send out runners underground. My neighbor has them & a lot of his wonder into my yard. They do flower and drop seeds or start from bird droppings. The thorn are nasty too. You can tell that I really don't care for this vine at all.

Those are a form of catclaw and in some areas are considered invasive..I pull and cut them regularly in my patch of woods.

Your vine is a Smilax. Not sure of the exact species, but it is a Smilax. One variety of Smilax, S. lanceolata, makes a very nice vine and is commonly grown over doorways in the South. It has lush, shiny green foliage.
