I'm using it pretty extensively along the back fence. My question is: can I train this plant to main leaders/canes (as I would a grape vine or a fruit tree espalier)? Will the main leaders/canes become thick and trunklike over time? Or will the old wood eventually die off?

Or would I be better off letting it scramble up the trellises however it wants and just casually cutting it back when it needs it?

It seems like the careful training would make it easier to cut back and keep it neater in the long run, if it's a good way to treat this vine.
