What can live with Virginia Creeper?

We have this beautiful Virginia Creeper that appeared a few years ago. It climbs up the side of my house and then attaches to the porch dangles down. We LOVE it. The only problem is, it kills everything I put around it. It has killed rose bushes, azaleas and rhododendrons (sp?) When pulling them up I noticed that my Virginia Creeper was all around under the ground.

So now I have this nice open spot with nothing in it because of the darn creeper.

My question, what will grow with it? If I put annuals in, will it kill those as well? How about lilac? I want to put something there.

This is a picture of it. I took this in October, everything on the ground there is now dead. There has to be something that this vine won't kill, right?
