One thing about the native species, they do not make the underground shoots that the Oriental ones do. They (the American wisteria)grow lots of branches at the bottom that run along the top of the ground and root, but they are not the ones that will pop up in your lawn, the neighbor's lawn, and across-a-divided-highway lawn to pop up and strangle the life out of anything not moving.

To propagate an American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens), just bury one of the vines in some dirt. Also, the American ones make lots of seeds here, seeds that require a nick in the seed coat to get them going.
