training vines esp. Sweet Autumn clematis

I'm in zone 5 in Wisconsin. I manage a memorial garden at my church. We have a good sized (at least 9 ' high with 4x 4 posts and benches) arbor as an entrance. I planted 2 SAC's at opposite posts. They grew well last year... but I had trouble getting it to go up. I ran a twine line to the top and tried to train them, but it wasn't very successful. I want to keep the structure looking attractive, so I don't want to use chicken wire or lattice that can look cheap. Does anyone have any other ideas for training? I am also thinking about planting a variety of Morning Glories to climb up a large pergola in the garden. Would the same training method work for them? Thanks alot.
