Chinese wisteria problems

| I've had a Chinese wisteria planted for about 3 years. I bought it so it could cover my deck railing. It had blooms on it when I purchased it. The following year, I got sparse blooms in fall. Last year, nothing. This spring, I noticed that 3/4 of the vines (of course, the part I had wrapped about my deck railing) were dead! Is this normal? I cut them back to the live areas, where there's only 3 short (18-24") stems that are leafing out. My questions are: how quickly will the wisteria recover, how much growth can I expect this year, and should I hold my breath on it blooming? I'm just not a patient person but the blooms are so heavenly smelling. The plant is sited in nearly full sun with good drainage. The living branches look great- they were just short in comparison to the vines that died. |

| Can't really answer to the recovery issue without understanding what caused the plant to die back in the first place. Unless those problems are solved, it would be difficult to predict the future of your plant. |
