Wild Grapevines - Good or Bad for trees?

I've been reading some great posts on these forums about the good and bad of having these vines in your trees. Recently I've been cutting them back everywhere I can because they are covering the tree line behind my house. They seem to really like the edges of fields and are often protected by thorny overgrowth which makes finding their source difficult.

Should I be cutting these to protect the trees or are they a natural part of the area (south central PA)? It seems like they may be okay for a large balanced forest, but being suburban there aren't too many big trees around and they all seem to have huge grapevines choking them.

What strategy should I be taking?
