I would use a soft cotton twine like 'butcher's twine' if you can find it. Because I am not fussy, I would probably be impatient and, rather than drive to a store, use the leftover roll of rough binder's twine people used to use to bind up haybales that I have in the shed. Sometimes it is available dyed green. I planted some, for a friend, at the bottom of their light pole and ran butchers twine up to the 6 ft. high top. The vines seemed to like it and bloomed beautifully, with very little help in climbing.

I use cut up knee high stockings. just cut them into small strips, they are wonderful to tie up anything. They are stretchy and soft and don't cut into vines, stalks, plants, etc. I have used them on tomatoes, grape vines anything you can think of and you can cut the strips to the desired length. I even had a small azalea bush that a neighborÂs dog laid on & broke. When the thing started putting on new growth it looked like the center of the shrub was gone so I took a big strip of the hose and just put it around the branches I wanted to pull towards the center and tied it. It instantly and gently brought the branches together and will help train the new growth to go upward rather than spread out.
