Wooden structures and clinging vines like Hydrangeas/ ivy

Hi,

I wonder if this is already a controversy, but I have a climbing hydrangea growing on my front porch which is doing quite well. The porch is wooden with some concrete pillars and looks very nice at this state, but I did notice the little aerial rootlets digging into my wood a bit as well as the concrete. My father would have thrown a fit about how this would "tear up the wood" and complained about some vines "tear up your foundation". I'm a gardener first and a pragmatist second and my view is that people have been growing these things for centuries... many of these plants have outlived him and me together! So, if someone can do it, damage must be avoidable.

Anyone know a how-to? or is there only don't-do's? LOL
