I would have thought that you could tie them to the posts at intervals just to help them up. Hops twine and once started they should climb up without any problems. Honey suckle new growth twines but older growth just kind of scramble so guide the new growth. Remember that the hops will die to the ground in winter so you'll need to pull the dead vines down. The honeysuckle will also need pruning to keep it in check.

Yes thanks. Seems the surface is to smooth and the hops slide down when I turn my back. Was hope for a semi permanent option too as would prefer not have to get up a ladder several times per year to tie, but I think you are right there!

I emailed mike darcy,a gardening show radio host whos show is on kxl101 out of Portland Oregon asking him this very thing. he thought the pvc I was going to use to grow hops to shade the south side of my newly painted house,for "protection" would betoo smooth. since I bought some for another purpose im going to go with a roll of bungee cord, cut and attached to those screw in anchor things or big plastic tent spikes. I may also try just wire or rope and see how it goes. I will secure some eye lag screws to underside of roof overhang. im glad I came here. i'll put it in my faves and post pics as the 2015 season progesses. keith in Vancouver washington

I used wire fencing - bigger guage wire than chicken wire and larger spaces between the wires. You can even get it with plastic colored coating (usually green), to help camouflage it. Welded Wire Fencing
