Sweet Autumn Clematis, no leaves, is it dead?

I had a small cutting of a Sweet Autumn Clematis that I nursed along for the past two or three years. This year it finally started looking like it was going to take off. I had to add some support to get it onto the fence I am trying to grow it on. It looked very good, then I stopped paying attention and the next time I looked, the whole plant was skeletonized. Not one leaf on it just stems. I found one small caterpillar on it. I don't hv a photo of it, sorry. Nothing else around it was touched. It was growing next to a rose and about 10 feet away from Butterfly plants, so I'm left to wonder. My question is, with no leaves on it, is it dead? Is there anything I can do to give it a shot at coming back?

Thanks....
