1 of 2 mandevillas died this summer

I just purchased 2 of these vines this year. I transplanted them into pots with potting soil (miraclegro brand). I watered them daily and after about a month I noticed on the one plant the leaves turned yellow and died off. Now all the leaves died and the plant seams dead. The other started to do the same so after some research I found they don't like it to moist. I now water the 2 plant less and it seems to be doing better.
What I would like to know now:
I'm in zone 7 and wanted to know if bring this plant in the garage or a cold frame garden be ok or will it need to be in the home?
If I start a layering of the 2 plant now would it be better to keep it attached to the plant until spring or cut it free as soon as it has roots?

Thanks for the help.
