To cover Pergola - Upstate NY

Just built a vinyl 16x16 pergola - total sun exposure. Would like to cover the top with something leafy and green, something flowery would be great too. Couple of questions: I keep seeing the word "annual" - does that mean I have to take it down after the winter or fall and replace in the spring? And what suggestions can you offer for my area (Zone5).

I should add - the pergola is completely on top of a deck. So, planting in the ground is not an option - this needs to be potted at each post on top of the deck.

Hi Arbond,
Yes "annual" means it will end at the first frost. You will have to remove the dead vine.

A nice vine that will do well in large pots and actually help contain it is "Sweet Autumn Clematis" The fragrance is incredible. I'll post a link to some info on it.
