Sweet pea vine not forming pods, HELP!

Hi all,

I have a sweet pea vine with the most wonderful scent and I want to keep it going next year! However, it is not forming pods. The plant is healthy, now about 6ft high and has had lots of flowers which I don't deadhead. It is in with some herbs so there are lots of pollinators. There is another variety a few feet away that is forming pods. The flowers seems to bloom and live fine but then the whole thing must drop off leaving no pod.

Could I manually pollinate them? I have read that they are pollinated while a bud so I'm not sure what to do.

Any advice or link would be really great! I'm usually good at finding the info I need but I just can't find anything. I got just a few seeds from a trade so this is my only hope for more for next year! Help!! :)

Yes, you could pollinate them (use a paintbrush or such) but I suspect the flowers are not setting seed for other reasons. You could try misting the plants a couple of times a day (this is traditionally done to enable runner beans to set seed) - just spray a light mist of water from a hand-held atomiser - not hard enough to knock the flowers off........ and check the watering - too much? Too little? Peas are not happy with a dry environment and like a deep rich soil.

Thanks! They did start to sprout a few pods just after I posted this. I guess they heard me begging! :).

I will keep your advice in mind. It could be the humidity or lack thereof his summer for sure!
