Dutchman's pipe on a telephone pole!

I love this vine and have planted it at the foot of a telephone pole on my property. I know it needs something to cling to - I wonder if I can just put a few nails into the pole, as opposed to wrapping it with mesh. Anyone have experience with such a situation? Thank you.
