Mandevilla Sun Parasol Lattice Fence Trough Planting ?

Hi - I have an 8'W x 7'H large opening lattice fence that I want to cover with this plant. I'd like to use a trough but I can save quite a bit of money if I use the 1'H one vs the 2'H one. Will 1' be deep enough for this plant to grow to 7' high ? The trough is 6' in length. Can I put 4 plants in it or limit it to 3? I've read elsewhere that the plant should be granduated into larger pots as it grows. Would I not have good results if I immediately transplanted the plants into the trough rather than graduating them ?

Unfortunately, Costco had a 3 pack for $8.99 that I purchased thinking it was the Mandevilla but it was the Dipladenia. I'll have to get the Mandevilla now as well. Any input on pot sizes or other ideas for the Dipladenia would be helpful also.

1 foot high by how wide? These vines develop a massive root ball, so depending on how big the planter and the plant root ball is will determine how many you can put in a planter.

Hi Kay - Thanks for the quick response. Sorry for the incomplete info. They would be 2' wide. Was also wondering how many holes and what size I should drill into the trough ? - Thanks, Brian

In a 1' by 2' planter, one would be all you could fit in there, that would allow it to fully develop and flourish. You will need to supplement the water unless it rains daily. As for the number of holes, one in each corner and one in the center should be sufficient.

Ok, so, the trough will be 6'L X 2'W X 1'H. With 3 plants that means that each plant would have 2' x 2' x 1'. I'm still wondering if 1 foot depth is really enough room or does the width make up for the depth ?
