| Have a trellis against a garage, behind a daylily bed. The daylilies get large pretty quickly in spring, so I am looking for a vine (or vines) for this trellis that will start to grow at about the same time so it doesn't have to struggle with the dense shade of the daylily leaves as it emerges.
Full sun, and the trellis is 8' wide. Ideally the vine would be one (or more!) of the following:
I do have passionflower already, so that one is covered (although that emerges late). Any ideas? Thanks!! :-) Mel |

| Thanks Ronnie17 -- I've been wanting a couple of Akebia for some time now, but thought that they preferred more shade. I actually had a spot slated for them, but need to buy the arbor still. Will they do well in full sun here? The full-sun trellis might be a better bet, then -- a male and female should fill the 8' wide trellis nicely. Will they get ripe in my zone in time to actually try them? Are they yummy? Hmmm... now I need to put something where I was thinking about putting the akebia originally ;-). North side of the house . . . I've already got hardy kiwi (can't wait until I finally get fruit to try it, hope it is as good as I've heard!) Thanks! :-) Mel |

| Mel, as long as it gets a bit of shade I think it should do well..I read some time ago that hardy kiwi here won't get fruit...you may need a pair...I have had one for about 4 years and never got any fruit, but I do only have one... |

| Actually that area doesn't get much shade. It does get a little, though, in very late afternoon. Hopefully that will be enough shade! I do have 2 hardy kiwis -- a male and female. I'm thinking about adding another female since I have a 4' width of trellis to fill. I was going to go with a fragrant vine, but I'm thinking that if I really like the kiwi, then I don't want to wait too long to get fruit -- I've heard it takes several years, so I want to start now. I guess if I'm not crazy about the taste I can always yank it and put something else in. Mel |
