Don't panic, first of all, it's an American wisteria, which isn't as agressive as the asian wisterias.
Second, there is a wonderful way to keep it right where you want it, just cut it with sissors til it gets real cold out, then in the spring, cut it all the way down.
Always water it at least once a week in summer, and what ever you do, DON"T put fertilizer on it.
If you do, it will never bloom for you.
Put it where you want it, the more you cut it with sissors in the summer when it's growing, the more flowers you will get.
I have a japanese tree wisteria that I keep in a small space, and it is always trimmed back with sissors all summer long, it blooms from spring to now.
It is blooming now, unbelievable.
