Sweet potato vine-digging and propagation

Last fall, I dug up the Margarita sweet potato vine tubers and over-wintered them in my basement.
They were a little slow to start this spring, but once they set slips, they grew wonderfully.

I am going to dig them again this fall, but I am wondering how long I can make it on 'old' tubers. I would assume there is a limit to how many seasons I can get out of these, but does anyone have experience with this?

As a side note: since the warm ground seems to get the slips going, would it work to place the tubers (protected) on my seed starting heat mat a couple weeks prior to planting next spring?
