Slugs maybe?

That's tragic, sorry that happened to you.

this is new to me. i have grown mgs for years and never have i had anything eat though the base of the plant. i am not to happy i wont get the seeds from it and see it bloom anymore but more curious as to what ate it.

i have other vines beside this one orange noah and yellow lutea and those were left un touched. these are in a pot.

didnt see any slime trail. weird.

Don't give up on geting seeds from your vine. Put the vine in water and your seeds will continue to grow and mature - even cutting it in several pieces will be ok too. Also, it just may root for you and you will have a new plant/plants to keep growing over the winter.

Emma is right, I've been doing that with vines that have seed pods on them and not ripe, but the frost will do them in. I've gotten almost all the pods to ripen this way, but never gotten any roots on them.

Look around and see if you have any chipmunks running around your garden beds. they love to bite right through the vine down and the bottom or anywhere they vine is growing.

Just had them do that to 2 of my vines this afternoon very daring and bold little critters too. I was right beside the vines on either side of me. All of a sudden I heard this rustling noise and there they where, 2 of them.

In less than 30 seconds, each one took a chomp on a different vine and scouted right off.

dont know about chipmunks but do have squirrels. if we had chipmunks i can see my cats now giving them a run for the money. they chase the squirrels too but they seem to know how to fight back. hehe
