Fall Planting

Hi everyone,

Is anyone here going to plant any new vines in the fall?

I'm thinking of putting in another honeysuckle before it gets too cold in my zone. Brushwood Nursery just restocked the one I'm interested in getting (Lonicera periclymenum

'Serotina Florida'). It would grow in one of these bottomless planters that we usually use to grow herbs/veggies in. I wanted something permenant out back. The location where it is get strong morning sun (until noon) and then bright shade the rest of the day.

Here's a picture of the exact one where I want to put it. I added more plants (dill and mom threw some bush beans seeds in there) after this picture was taken, but you get the idea.

I'll take a picture of the trellis I'm going to grow it on. I grew cucumbers on it this year (I got it this year as well).

Here's the trellis I'm planning to use. I can already imagine what the honeysuckle would look like on it :)

Brad, your design idea is good, but that flimsy wood trellis won't hold your honeysuckle for very long. This vine gets very large and heavy - you will need to make one out of rebar or similar heavy metal if you intend it to last more than one season. This type of trellis is good for one season, but after that, it starts rotting and falling apart.

Kayjones, I guess then I'll use it for a lighter vine then. I can't get the honeysuckle now anyway and I probably won't get it until spring. I already used the vine for growing cucumbers on and it toppled over in the wind towards the end of the season. Mom ripped it out last week when we were supposed to get high winds with the thunderstorms. If I do get the honeysuckle, I'll have to find a metal trellis first.

I put my Reiman clematis in the spot for now since it needed out of the pot it was in.
