Can vines be grown in containers?

I can't stop buying vines. I am running out of room for them, but there are so many I want to try out. Can they be successfully grown in containers? I know some of them can - I am currently growing a Pink Jasmine in a container, and considering that I totally neglect it, it is doing surprisingly well. But is there anything that I shouldn't try in a container? What are the rules?

Ipomoea nil and I. purpurea do very well in containers. I grow all my MGs (Ipomoea or other genera) in containers. I generally learn from the experience as I go. It would be helpful if you were more specific on which vine group you were addicted to so we can focus on plant requirements?
