Flame Vine

Hi, I'm really hoping someone out there can help me. We have just arrived at our place in Mexico (just north of Puerto Vallarta), and my beautiful huge flame vine has been reduced to just woody trunks and vines. No green leaves anywhere! When you look close you can see some new growth on the trunks but very tiny. Do these vines naturally die back? We pruned back some of the growth last year, it was taking over everrything, and every other year we have come down, it has been green and actively growing. Anyone know what happened and what I should do next. Should I cut it all right back to the main trunks and hope for the best?
Thanks

| Could someone have sprayed it with weed killer? You have nothing to lose at this point - cut it back. |
