| Hi Maggie, You might want to look into the Bignonia capreolata - commonly known as Crossvine. It has little grippy things that will grasp and hold onto a flat surface, as well as the little tendrils that will wrap around supports. It should be evergreen in your area and will take sun very well. Has pretty glossy leaves and the hummingbirds adore the blooms. The only thing I don't remember is whether it is poisonous. So many plants are if enough of it is ingested. Well, I just googled Crossvine and there are numerous hits with plenty of reading and photos. In one article, I read "The native Americans used crossvine as a remedy for a number of physical conditions, including diphtheria, edema, headaches and rheumatism." Based on this, I'd think it wouldn't be too dangerous. I'm growing this vine for the first time this year and I am so impressed with all aspects of it's lovely looks and performance. Every garden should have at least one crossvine. :-) Hope this helps. Mary |
