Black Eyed Susan Vine- a few questions

Hi
This was my first year growing black eyed susan vines. I started them from seed and might have been a bit late. Plus, on the East Coast there was so much overcast and rain this year that they did not get the sun they need, so there were lots of leaves but no blooms. Could there be another reason for no blooms? Too much feeding? not the right kind of plant food?
My other question is that now there seems to be a lot of new growth at the base. I know it's an annual, or tender perennial in warmer climates, but I'm in a "medium" zone (zone 7) Is there a way to winterize the vine at the base so that it will send out new shoots in the spring?
Any and all advice is appreciated.
Thanks

| I barely feed my BES vines, maybe once every 4-6 weeks. I'm also in zone 7a. I keep them in full sun and water them well. Mine had loads of blooms this year. You can cut back the vines to the new growth at the base and winter it over inside under a grow light. You can't allow it to go dormant but it doesn't require as much water when inside. I've only done this with Raspberry Smoothie because it doesn't produce seed (at least not for me), otherwise I start them from seed in the spring. |
