Pruning Annual Vines

One time I never did get to transplant an MG so I left it in the small pot with a small trellis. I kept cutting it back all summer. It rewarded me with some huge blooms. I'd like to try it with some others, like moonflower and the spanish flagg. Anyone ever prune any?
