| I'm growing Japanese morning glories indoors over the winter. I find they grow nicely with some augmentation of natural light using a basic everyday use fluorescent tube. Give them short-day lighting and they flower up and make seeds nicely. Pictured here is a seedling I'm growing at work sitting on a windowsill with a western sun exposure. |

| Looks like their ready to take off. I had success with one in the house once. It seems if someone attempts this,it might be good to start one that is very easy to grow. Patience is not one of my best qualities. :) |
| Growing the vine indoors is easy. Use a scissors to keep the vine in place once the flower buds start being produced by the vines. |

| I can't wait to start my seeds. You make it tempting to start my seeds now. I read the Japanese Morning Glory do not like to be transplanted, so I will wait. I love the lime green morning glory that is leafing out. What color will the flower be on that one? Barbra |
| The yellow leaf morning glories are good for the various Japanese methods of pruning to produce a bonsai-style plant. The primary reason is the plant does not grow as vigorously as non-yellow gene plants. Here is one that is not yellow leaf, however, it is behaving as such a plant. It appears to me there are even a couple flower buds developing on it. |
| Barbra, it's supposed to have reddish flowers with very fine straight streaks of lighter color. |
| The last one whose photo I posted is supposed to have pink flowers and very variegated leaves. A bit like a pink Cameo Elegance. We'll see, if I'm lucky enough to grow them out to make flowers. Ths one may have yellow flowers. |

| Those look beautiful! The one that has the redish flower, I noticed also has a redish stem. Are any of the seeds you plant solid white? What do those produce? In my 50 mixed seeds, I have 7 that are hugh solid white seeds. I can't wait until spring gets here, so I can plant these seeds. Barbra |
| The seeds I planted were all black or dark brown. I think moonflower had blonde seeds. |

| Joseph, how many hours do you keep the lights on? |
| A little less than 12 hours, Ronnie. |

| Joseph, the color is correct but the shape of the seed is diffrent than what shows as the moonflower seed you posted. These seeds are flat on one side, and half moon shaped like all the other seeds. I did not get any brown seeds. Barbra |
| Thanks Joseph...I'll give that a try. |

| Hey Barbra - I got a link for you on transplanting Morning Glories. |

| Sometimes Ipomoea tricolor seeds are blonde colored. I guess you'll have to plant them to see what comes out. That's why I don't like mixes. I prefer the surprises from a box of chocolates instead. |
| Ron, that's great guidance. I clipped the post for future reference. |
| I nicked and soaked 5 seeds I grew in 2009 for winter growing fun indoors. I thought I would have reduced germination due to seed age and appearance quality of the seeds. I am pleasantly surprised with what appears to be 80% germination after a few days. These seeds should make the flowers shown in the next photo. |
| The latest batch of seeds should make plants whose flowers will be deep blue with yellow variegated leaves. It was a breathtakingly beautiful Japanese MG if you're into blue flowers. |
| I am winding the vine of this Japanese morning glory around a circular wire trellis as it grows. This Higo asagao has good leaf color and its even developing flower bud. I am hopeful and excited to see its flowers soon! |
| I have 4 of 5 seeds sprouted and now potted. Here is a photo of the beautiful cotyledons of the deep blue/bright white tube/yellow variegated dragonfly leaf whose photo I recently posted. I admire its deep hypocotyl coloration and contrasting yellow color of the seed leaves. |

| I also share the appreciation of the Beauty of the Details present at all stages. |
| Here's another view of the office windowsill MG seedling. The cotyledons opened nicely on this one and one other plant. So now I have two fairly strong looking plants to watch grow over the next couple of months. |
| I am growing an Ipomoea nil and an Ipomoea purpurea together under lights in the sunroom. I'm doing this to maximize available container space. Note the interesting variegated leaf of Ipomoea purpurea in the lower part of the photo. |
| One of my Japanese morning glory plants made a flower this morning. I like the chocolate color very much. |
| It's snowing here. What a nice pic. :) |
| Thank you, Dena, for your nice comment. |
| Ron, thank you for your nice comment. It was you and the Japanese who taught me to watch for details in all stages of growth for clues to how the plant may grow. |
| Joseph I must say your vines look great but your photography is looking FANTASTIC!! |
| Thanks, Ronnie! How are your plants doing this winter? |
| Variegated MG leaves were foreign to me till I discovered GW. They make growing them even more special. :) Arum |
| Thanks, Dena, it was eBay I think that got me hooked with all the photos of variegated leaves. Blue Silk was the ultimate hook for me. Technically this isn't a Japanese morning glory but I am still growing it indoors at the office in the windowsill. It is Merremia gemella. It should make small yellow flowers. I love the yellow flowers on MGs almost as much as blue ones. |

| Beautiful pictures Gerri. I love the variegated leaves. Really nice! |
| They are beautiful, I agree. The variegated leaves are nice to see while we wait for flowers. |

| gerris, your plants are amazing, I hope you've given yourself a good pat on the back, and that blue is stunning !! Christine |
| Thanks, Christine, it's very nice of you to say that. Alas, both seedlings died. I have four more seeds soaking in the water and I hope one of them will have life it it to make a flowering plant this winter. |

| There is a certain beauty in the flower even on the day after |

| The leaves are becoming intensely variegated and the flowers should be a nice pink color. We should see flowers soon, look at all the flower buds! |
| Joseph, what is the name of this one? The coloring in the leaves is so intense. You must be supplying just the right amount of light. :) Arum |
| I'm afraid that, like many of the MGs I grow, this one has no name. Here is one that should open up its flower buds this coming week. I'm excited to see it! |
| Isn't that an unusual shape? Very pretty and interesting. No name huh? :) Arum |
| It is the color of the flower that is the focus in this strain. Yellow is rare in Ipomoea nil. |
| It seems I'm growing petite Japanese morning glories this winter, which is a good thing for indoors gardening. Isn't this pink one a cutie? |
| My goodnesss, I don't see how you do that. MG's are difficult for me to grow outside sometimes. |
| I will probably transplant this little one to a bit larger container. At present time it seems happy with all the flowers its making so I will hold off for now. This is another shot showing details of the flower. |
| Here is the salmon colored and curiously shaped flower of this Japanese morning glory, happily growing in a six ounce container under lights indoors. |

| This is a yellow Japanese morning glory, quite a rare color I think. We are constantly looking for the day when a strain will make a dark yellow flower like is seen in other Ipomoea species flowers. This strain shown should make single flower form but this morning it surprised me with a reverse tube. |
| This cute Japanese morning glory opened up its flower for me this morning. I am growing the plants indoors over the winter. It is something to distract me from winter cold and dreariness. It is 19 degrees F / -7 degrees C outside and I laugh at it, seeing this beautiful flower today. |
| I grew Dena's 'Bold Miss Piggy' indoors in 2009. The color was so intense I had to wear sunglasses to look at the flower. |
| Joseph, yes, it is a very pink pink. :) |
| Dena, all 3 JMG varieties you sent me recently germinated, even the ones you said were not fresh. I got 100% germination on all seeds I attempted. |
| Joseph, that's wonderful! I'm sure you will enjoy the blooms. :) Arum |
| This vine has a flower bud at every leaf node, so I'll be greeted with a morning face for at least another couple of weeks. The flower is small, at most 2 inches diameter. |
| I just started a MG myself in the house about a week ago, and to my surprise it has sprouted! Never get tired of that surprised, pleased feeling. :) Arum |
| I'm excited for you, Dena. Which one are you growing? This flower shown below has less red pigment than those which appeared earlier on the plant. I like the slight blizzard color pattern near the tube. |
| I'm not sure, it's going to be a surprise. They were just laying out, and I put them in the dirt. It seems to be one of the variegated ones. Nice bloom. :) |

| Joseph,I'm amazed at how many MG's you have growing in the house. Quite a variety. :) |
| Dena, Thank you. There may seem like a lot of varieties of MGs but one variety has made different color patterns so it may seem like more than there really are growing in my home. This summer I'll be growing Ipomoea indica, if any of these sprouted seeds survive. It will be great to see the intense blue flowers of this species. |
| Doesn't the color in this flower make you go wild?! haha I have to suppress yelling like Tarzan in the morning to keep from waking up my family at 5 a.m. |
| Here's a flower from today on an Ipomoea nil vine. I'll have a new one to show tomorrow from an Ipomoea purpurea plant. |

| what is the difference between a regular morning glory and a japanese morning glory? |
| There is good discussion on this subject in this GW thread (see link below). It's a good question you have, and I could not answer it any better than what Ron has posted in his thread. |

| thanks!! I didn't mean to be rude by asking all your pictures are really pretty by the way. |
| Joseph, you may be waiting for the big snow, I wonder if it really will snow. Never the less this winter has been made more bearable by your post, Soon we may be able to plant outside. I finally purchased some Heavenly Blues at the dollar store! :) Guess I will be feasting my eyes on them after all. This year is going be be a great year for MG's,s I can just tell. Thanks for all the beautiful pics. Arum |
| Thanks, Dena! That's quite a find at the dollar store. Be sure to post lots of photos! |
| if you have your MGs indoors, what are they climbing on? |
| I'm growing mine on circular trellis supports. You can find them at gardeners.com or eBay seller azuremore sometimes carries the ones popularly used in Japan. In one pot I'm using a teepee of 3 bamboo canes. This little MG has remained petite and doesn't need a support Joseph |
| Well if/when you transplant them outside, how will you get them off their supports? |
| I will not unravel the vines. They're here to stay for their life cycle. I'll sow a new crop of seeds about 2 weeks prior to last frost date for planting outdoors. Here is an Ipomoea purpurea flower bud that should open up tomorrow! |
| This one opened up this morning. You can see the trace of yellow in the flower and variegated leaf, traits rarely seen in Ipomoea purpurea. |
| do you breed your own mg? |
| The striped and the white are equally beautiful. |
| Thank you, Dena. It is a cutie pie. Desirai, I have not gotten into breeding MGs, although it does look like fun to cross varieties to get new and spectacular flower forms. |

| Joseph, my that's silky and pretty. :) When I first came to GW it was about aroids, and then it was about trading, finally it was just about vines, mostly MG's. It doesn't really matter, I still love comming to the vine forum and seeing the beautiful MG's. |
| Thanks, Dena. By the way, I potted on a MG plant from the seeds you sent me in a recent trade (Chocolate Explosion). It's growing in the basement under lights. I hope to see flowers soon. I have continued this thread in another thread. The link to find out is shown below. |
