Starting a tree :-)

Posted by etii France 8 (My Page) on

I start making a tree today. It's only a beginning and my violet (Boronne de Rotschild) need to be older. I didn't feel to cut the other parts of the plant even if I know I should (too many blooms are about to come) but it's fun. Wait and see what it will become and how I will feel next actions :-)

All 'n' only the best :-)
Thierry.

RE: Starting a tree :-)

etii, I saw the photo posted by 'Nathalie France' (a few posts below yours) of a violet 'tree'. Never seen any violets growing that tall here! I had quite a few of the fragrant violets in zone 7 but here in zone 10 (semi tropics) they are few and far between! I'd be delighted to get one to grow as large as Nathalie's.

I have patches of tropical violets passed on to me by a generous GW member. They are blooming profusely, but not one has grown beyond the normal 4".

Your Baronne de Rothschild looks wonderfully healthy. Please do post pics as it grows. I'm very curious to see the result!

In your climate you should be able to make some of us green with envy - by growing some of the true tree (OK, shrub) violets from Hawaii...

Here's some links in case you are intrigued... :)

Mike, thanks for posting the above. One is never tooooo old to learn! The flowers in the close-p photos are beautiful. I wonder where one could get hold of these here in the States (Florida)! I'll search around! Thanks again,

Janmary,

You could always try calling Gerry in Hawaii:

Gerald D Carr - (808) 239-4667 - 47-024 Hui Iwa Pl Apt C, Kaneohe, HI 96744
He would be able to tell you the status of these species (some are protected), and might know where to get seeds/plants of the others.

Thanks Mike. Have you had any luck growing Parma Violets?

Yes - I grow a few - 'Ash Vale Blue' (of course; with the help of Clive Groves, who gave me back some progeny from my original plant after it died), and a white one.
