'Feline' no more

...instead, to my surprise, my plant (now opening its first blossoms) has turned out to be the sport parent - 'Violette de Toulouse'! I am not unhappy about this, as I wanted 'Feline' as a novelty, but I really lusted after the plush, double buttons of VdT instead - I simply hadn't the space or money for both. I have now a very vigorous clone of that beautiful plant, and knowing it originated in Nathalie's garden I am sure it will remain healthy and strong.

At first I tried my best to pinch off the runners to keep the energy concentrated for flowers, but this plant has entirely outpaced me; it is much faster-spreading than, say, 'King of the Doubles' or any other violets I've yet grown. It seems to be setting a huge number of buds in spite of this, so I am not even slightly worried. Spring seems to be here - I cross my fingers that winter will stay at bay!

Stefan

Hi !

Strange parmas, as any kind, definitively :-) And marvellous surprising violets.
Thanks for that little story part of our violet's history ;-)

All the best :-)
Thierry.

That's a pity..'Féline' is truly a temperamental plant...Mine also turned back to double flowers. But I received several testimony of gardeners in USA who grow it and they were/are? happy! I even received amazing pictures...I hope it remains single somewhere...Has somebody else in this forum experienced this variety? Any single type still alive?

Attached is an image of what I received as Viola 'Feline'. It began to bloom about three weeks ago. It grows in a cold frame with other Parma and sweet violets. Most of these are now showing lots of buds, so unless the weather becomes very bitter, there should be lots of blooms this spring.

Here is a link that might be useful: Viloa 'Feline'

Oh! fantastic Jm! So there are still few hopes to save this variety! You have now a very heavy burden! ;-)
Enjoy it!
( Perhaps will you be able to notice a slightly difference of fragance with parmas on it?..This is something I perfectly remember on 'Féline'...)
Good luck
Nathalie

It will be a light burden because I'm sure it is being shared by many people. My plant came from Canyon Creek Nursery last fall. Nathalie, I'm sure your violet is in (very many) good hands.
