winter blooming violet

There's a violet in my yard that's evergreen and blooms all winter and into the spring. Snow or really hard frost slows it down for a while, but it basically starts blooming toward the end of October, is in full swing by Christmas, continues on till the spring blooming violets start blooming. It prefers shade and makes a great accompaniment to snow drops, and winter blooming cyclaman (if only I had some). Anybody know what it is? Thanks.

I wouldn't have a clue without any description of the flower or leaf. Here is the USDA site. Look at the maps toward the bottom of the page. Each species has a map of distribution. If it grows in your area, do a Google search of images on that species and hopefully you will come up with a match.

If it's yellow, it might be this one

Here is a link that might be useful: Viola sempervirens
