Is Johnny Jump-up invasive in the Bay Area?

Posted by marcia_oakland z9 No CA (My Page) on

I love plants that self-sow, but I'm wondering how aggressive this one is. (I spend a lot of time pulling up impatiens balfouri, which I love but which produces millions of offspring each year.) Any advice?

Thanks,
Marcia

I'm not sure pansies are so much invasive...if you tear them off before they make seeds you should see the end...

They're certainly invasive here in zone 3, so if the conditions in your zone 9 area are to their liking, then I can't imagine they wouldn't be even more so. Here, they seed so thickly that other plant seedlings are choked out. This year, I vow (once again) to attempt to eradicate them from the yard... if only it was possible to have only a few of them!

Not for me-- I'm just a few minutes away from you in Albany. They will self seed, but nothing crazy.
