What's a good ID source online?

Posted by sred98 z7 OK (My Page) on

I've got 5 or 6 different types of violets growing wild in my yard. I'm in the process of transplanting most of them because we are redoing that section of the yard. I would love to be able to identify them. I found a pic of one that is a Confederate Violet, but am lost on the others.

Does anyone know of a good database where I can look these up? I don't have any way of posting pics.

Thanks so much,

sred98

sred98,
This key is for the eastern U.S. violets but maybe it will help some anyway. Good luck, Tom

Yes, the AVS key is very helpful.
Also, I find the following web site with its photographs, very helpful, even though some of the Latin has not been updated to latest nomenclature.

When the page opens: At the top of the page, in the 'Quick Jump' box, select 'Gallery'. When that page opens, in the box where is asks you to select by name, symbol or group select 'Genus' and then type in Viola, then click on 'Display Results'. You get a typed list. Just above it is the option to chose a chart of photo thumbnails.
I hope you find this useful.

Jepson can be reached on the web for the Western US violets. The nomenclature can be difficult, however, for people who aren't botanists.
