Unknown violet species

Hello everyone,

I have a violet I've been growing for several years now that was a volunteer in a container of imported plants from China. It may have come from China or could have simply been a plant that seeded itself from my friend's plant collection. It is quite a large plant with the foliage resembling the size of a standard African Violet. It flowered for the first time this spring and I snapped a photo. Any ideas on what this violet may be??

Unknown Violet

Thanks,

Riz

RE: Unknown violet species

Hi Riz,

I certainly don't recognize it, but would you be able to make use of a floral key to help determine the species? If it is native to China, then you could check out the link below, which should be most useful while the plant is in bloom.

Stefan

Here is a link that might be useful: genus Viola in the Flora of China
