etain violas, heat, sun, and dormancy?

| I plantes some etain perrenial violas several weeks ago, and they are looking stressed. We have had some very hot weather. Do they go dormant in the summer or do I need to place them in a shadier spot?

| They'll probably need more shade to have a chance to make it in a hot-summer climate, but even that may not be enough, depending. They don't go dormant in the sense that they die back and return when the weather cools off, but will slow down or stop flowering when the weather is too warm. I had trouble keeping them alive as perennials between the hot summers and cold winters, plus various pests, back in the Midwest; they probably survive much better and longer in more moderate climates, but with luck and some moist-but-well-drained shade, maybe yours will be able to settle in for a while. I suspect it's not a terribly long-lived perennial even in a perfect habitat, and probably needs to be propagated frequently to maintain the cultivar. |
