A six-petalled aberrent bloom

I found this unusual bloom on a Viola striata plant. It has six petals rather than the normal five. Has anyone else noticed blooms like this one?

Hi Tom,
Yes - I had a bloom with 6 petals about 3 years ago, only it was the bottom petal that was doubled (had two spurs, too). It was only one bloom, and the plant did not do it again in later years. Interesting curiosity.

And for some reason unknown to me, it seems that extra valves to seedpods are more frequent than extra petals to flowers.

Cheers, Mike

Have you noticed if there is any particular violet that, more often than other violets, tends to have the seedpods with extra valves? Or is it a fairly random occurrence?

In daylilies, I've noticed that certain cultivars tend to fairly regularly produce seedpods with extra sections. I have a hunch that it might be loosely linked to a tendency to produce polytepalous [with extra segments] flowers also.

that's funny!
I rightly discovered yesterday a very young plant of Viola chaerophylloides with 3 cotyledon leaves!?

I already saw seedpod with extra valves too and extrapetals or extra spur on flowers sometimes...

Tom - yes, some species are more prone to extra-valved seedpods (I can't remember which ones; in my notes somewhere).

Natha - I have seen what looks like 4 cotyledons on V. chaerophylloides, but there were actually only 2 cotyledons, each one divided almost to the base!

What I want to see, but which seems mythical, is a peloric violet flower - symmetrical - where all 5 petals are identical and have spurs. Well, I've only been looking for 15 years so far, so maybe it is a bit soon...!

Viola 'Mrs R. Barton' frequently have three spurs on the flowers.
