Viola odorata and Parmas indoors?
| | |
Posted by bellegallica z8 (My Page) on Mon, Apr 10, 06 at 18:08
| Hi,
I'm new to violets, except for Persian violets (Exacum affine) which doesn't count, of course. :-) I was wondering if the 'odoratas' and Parmas can be grown on a sunny windowsill?
Also, how well would these do outdoors for me in zone 8, almost zone 9, summers?
Thanks! |

| You really won't have good luck growing them indoors. They need the cooler temperatures of winter, temperatures that often fluctuate between day and night, higher humidities and air flow that exist out of doors and simply cannot be duplicated inside. Extended indoor culture will result in poor quality plants that don't bloom and either waste away or contract an incurable case of spider mites (which can still occur outside, but are less likely when the plants aren't as stressed). However, they will happily tolerate the heat of your summer if their other cultural needs (moist, rich, well-drained soil and partial shade) are met. |

| Thank you, Stefan. I will definitely try some outdoors and do my best to keep them happy. |
