I thought I would share this precious pic with you...

I have always called this a 'tasmanian violet'. Feel free to correct me if you have another name.

It is planted in a shady area near my walkway that is surrounded by hostas. A very nice combination!

Enjoy!

That's a nice piccy of Viola hederacea, which comes from the southeast corner of Australia (up to parts of Queensland) including Tasmania. It used to be classified in the genus Erpetion (where it also had a different species name - reniforme).

It likes a bit of cool dampness; I have seen it growing rather well under a shady bench seat in a nursery on the outskirts of Melbourne, and I have grown it as a hanging basket plant in my bathroom. It is not as hardy as most Viola species; mine usually succumb to a few degrees of frost here in the south of England.

Rob Peace, the expert on Viola in Australia, would tell us there are actually several species lumped under this name. There are several cultivars too, all (as far as I know) being slightly smaller than the plant commonly sold as V. hederacea. Most types are attractive, and easy to propagate from the runners, which root at the nodes. They also come well enough from seed, which is a good way to ensure you don't lose the plant completely when/if the parent gets killed by frost.

Thanks for the info Mike...very helpful.

It is a totally 'easy to love' little violet.

Very pretty! I just bought two flats of Viola hederacea. I'll be planting it in shade, around some stepping stones and it will get regular water. I usually don't have summer temps higher than 90-95, so I hope all will be well with it.
