Violets in Lawns

Does anyone have any advice for normalizing violets in a lawn? Do they have any beneficial effect on the soil, like clover? Any specific varieties to use? I'd appreciate a wide range of responses.

Do you mean naturalizing????? Any violets are good but tough viola sororia is the best......... You can find it everywhere around here.... it's New Jersey's state flower...... I don't think they have a beneficial effect..... Most violets won't do well in a very sunny lawn so it will have to be partly shady..... I've let many violets naturalize in my lawn..... they stay so short they're not a nuisance and they beautiful carpets of purple and heart shape leaves in spring..... well the heart shaped leaves all the time....... :) ....... :)

Hi,

I am in the process of replacing the sod in my parkway with violets. As I am just starting, I can't comment on the outcome, but it will sure beat mowing, and I think it will be beautiful next spring when they all go into bloom.

I am mixing varieties and colors, though, not just using the common blue variety.
