Spreading violets

About two years ago I planted about three of those freckled violet plants. They were the cutest thing. Now I have them everywhere in my perennial bed. They are spreading like wildfire. I'm beginning to hate them....too much weeding out. Does anyone have a suggestion for keeping them in control. I know they are spreading by seed. They have filled in the spot I wanted filled and then some. They've created more work than they are worth. (Not really because they are usually the first thing I see in the spring in that flower bed. And we all know that feeling after a winter like this past one.) Anyway, HELP!!!!!

RE: Spreading violets

KathieO, You will probably have to weed them out. I have a spreading violet that went from a bed to the middle of my grass. Also try not watering the area and see if the problem slows some after weeding.

I have controled mine by regular-every two to three weeks- weeding. In the spring, hoe the area and that should stop some of them. Then, go on patrol looking for the foliage and pull. Here in Colorado we do not have much water and the bed the violets are in does not always get hit by the sprinkler. I think that has also helped to stop it.

Plant Hens & Chicks and gravel mulch them! That should stop the violets from getting to that area.
