Viola vs. Violets

Posted by Consider 6 VA (My Page) on

I am interested in photographing wildflowers, but am inexperienced in identifying my finds. I have recently photgraphed a "field pansy"(viola bicolor, I believe.)

A very basic question ,please:

What is the difference between violas and violets?

I have a home page with my images: www.consider-the-lilies.org.

Thanks very much!

Hi !

Sometimes it's not easy to make the difference between the two, mainly with wild flowers.
Look at the bloom, both have 5 petals but:
Pansy: side petals are UP
Violet: side petals are down
The foliage is a good way too.
Great site :-) Go on and share those nice pics. Your field pansy is definitively a PANSY: U're right :-) But don't ask me which one (I don't like them much)
If you can't identify a viola (pansy or violet) U can post the picture here :-)

Take care :-)
Thierry.
